Your Ancestors
Life was always easier
on well-drained and in cave-rich hilltops than on marshes or wooded
low-lying land in prehistoric days. The Mendip Hills have been home
to our ancestors since the earliest times.

Many different cultures
and civilisations have enriched this area. Among them were the ancient
Neanderthals, Paleolithic cave people of the Ice Age, Neolithic friends of
Cheddar Man, Bronze Age Beaker people, Iron Age warrior chiefs, the Romans (who
came here for lead in AD43), King Alfred and the Saxons (who built a Royal
Palace here), King John (who loved to hunt the Royal Forest of Mendip), right
through to the Victorian Explorers and Showmen who developed the caves.
